Before arriving in Tokyo, I researched key locations across the city — not only the iconic ones, but also lesser-known streets and corners that offered authentic textures. I mapped out shooting windows based on light conditions, crowd flow, and access, to make sure each frame had intention, even in a fast-paced environment.
Though the shoot was run & gun, there was a strong creative compass throughout. We made real-time decisions that aligned with this vision — framing shots in reflections, tunnels, escalators, and layering motion through Tokyo’s architecture and daily life.
We split the city by neighbourhoods — Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, and others — and dedicated specific days to each, depending on light and weather. This helped us cover ground efficiently and keep visual variety across the story. It was just the two of us, which meant staying light, mobile, and reactive.
The concept of “Chasing Momentum” emerged after the shoot. In the edit, we built a narrative around a photographer’s inner state — the tension between speed and stillness. The voiceover, pacing, and music came together to reflect a visual essay more than a traditional short film.
